Vail Eyes New Gondola for 2012-2013 Season

Vail Resorts ChairliftThe 2012-2013 ski season will mark the 50th anniversary of Vail Resorts, and the company is looking to add a new high-capacity gondola for the momentous occasion.

Many long-time Vail residents and visitors recognized the irony in the announcement as a gondola was the first lift that powered to life nearly 50 years ago on December 15, 1962. It remained in place until the 1970s, when it was replaced by a chairlift.

Vail Resorts currently uses a Vista Bahn chairlift, which was installed in 1985. The high-speed, four-person chairlift was the best solution available at the time, but advancements in technology have dated it considerably.

The new gondola will be faster and carry more passengers in each car. Vail Resorts also plans to have wi-fi availability in the cars for passengers’ convenience.

Since Vail Mountain land is National Forest property, these and any other changes need to be approved and passed through various steps according to the National Environmental Policy Act, which includes a public comment period. However, officials expect the project to pass fairly quickly and in time for next season.
