Over 85 percent of the $10.5 million dollar investment for the new Homestake Peak school is staying local, according to general contractor Evans/Chaffee. Evans said in a meeting mid-January in regards to the work staying local that “We made a concerted effort to make sure of that” and “That’s important to us.”
Homestake Peak will combine Minturn Middle School, Meadow Mountain Elementary School, and fifth-graders from Red Sandstone Elementary School and provide education for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The new school is schedule to open this coming fall.
Future students, parents, and others involved met to decide on school colors, mascot, and name of the new school. The school colors will be light green and navy blue, and the mascot will be the fighting falcons.
Most of Homestake Peak will be housed in the old Battle Mountain High School building, which has been renovated. By consolidating the middle school and elementary school, the county will save half a million dollars each year by cutting down on utilities, maintenance, and staff positions that are duplicates.
Be on the look out for more information about Homestake Peak. The school will provide an “expeditionary learning program” and it is an exciting addition to the community.
